Adon Olam

Master of the world, Who was King before any creature was created

Adon Olam, opening of Shacharis, after Birchot HaShachar and the three introductory pesukim

There is a question hidden in these familiar words.

Normally, a king needs a people. מלכות is not simply power or control; it is a relationship in which an עם recognizes the king and accepts his authority. That makes the opening of Adon Olam surprising. How can we say that Hashem was already King before any creature was created? There was no world and no עם over which to rule.

The Rebbe explains that these words refer to מלכות as it is rooted in עצמותו ית׳. At that level, Hashem's Kingship does not depend on creation. Since עצמותו ית׳ is כל יכול, מלכות can apply even before an עם exists. This is more than saying that Hashem knew a world would eventually be created; the source of מלכות itself is already present in עצמות.

Once we exist, however, there can be an actual relationship between King and people. This is the meaning of שתמליכוני עליכם: we accept His Kingship over ourselves. Through that acceptance, we become subjects of the King.

Accepting Hashem as King means more than believing that He is powerful or in control. It means accepting עול מלכות שמים through קבלת עול: His רצון has authority even when it differs from my own. So while saying these words, the thought can be simple: You were King before I existed. Now I accept You as King over me.

The question

A king normally needs a people who accept his authority. How could Hashem be King before anyone existed?

The answer

The Rebbe explains that His מלכות is rooted in עצמות. It does not begin with creation. Once I exist, I can accept that Kingship over myself.

While saying it

You were King before I existed. Now I accept You as King over me.

For these words

Accepting His Kingship

In practice

Accepting Hashem as King means more than believing He is in control. His רצון has authority over my רצון. Before davening begins, I accept His Kingship over myself and recognize that I am standing before the King.

Worth knowing

One who says the beginning of Adon Olam with כוונה is promised that his tefillah is heard and that no Satan prosecutes it—perhaps why it opens davening.

Recognize who you are standing before—and begin davening from there.

Nekudah B’Tefillah

Carry this into davening

Inner movement

Not only knowing that Hashem is King, but becoming His subject through ביטול and קבלת עול.

One question

If Hashem is my King, where am I prepared to let His רצון come before my own?

The Question: Can There Be a King Without a People?

The Frierdiker Rebbe begins his תש״ג maamar on Adon Olam by asking how these words can be true. מלוכה is not simply the ability to control something. A king rules over people who are distinct from him, understand his authority, and accept it. As the familiar expression says, אין מלך בלא עם—there is no king without a people.

The maamar develops that point carefully. A person’s control over his own body is not called kingship, because his limbs are part of him. Nor is tending animals the same as ruling a people.

But אשר מלך בטרם כל יצור נברא describes Hashem as King before any such relationship was possible. There was no creation, no distinct being, and no one who could accept His authority. Who, then, was He King over?

The Rebbe’s Answer

The Rebbe answers in the מוגה maamar ד״ה אדון עולם, said on the second day of Rosh Hashanah תשמ״ג:

ומכיון שעצמותו ית׳ הוא כל יכול, שייך שיהי׳ מלך גם בלא עם.

The מלכות spoken of here is מלכות כפי שמושרשת בעצמותו ית׳—Kingship as it is rooted in Hashem’s Essence. Since עצמות is כל יכול, this essential מלכות is not dependent on an עם already existing.

The Rebbe Rashab and the Frierdiker Rebbe explain the next stage. Once there is an עם, the essential source of מלכות can become a revealed relationship of King and people. Their ביטול awakens the revealed רצון למלוכה—the desire that His Kingship be expressed over them.

What Does It Mean to Accept Hashem as King?

To understand what אשר מלך asks of us, the maamar turns to the Rosh Hashanah theme of שתמליכוני עליכם—accepting Hashem’s Kingship over ourselves.

The Rebbe explains in

Accepting Hashem as King is more than recognizing that He created the world or controls what happens in it. I accept myself as subject to the King. That leads to קבלת עול, the readiness to follow His רצון because it is His will.

קבלת עול does not mean having no רצון of one’s own. It means that when my רצון conflicts with Hashem’s רצון, His רצון governs what I do.

The distinction can be stated simply:

I do not create the essential root of His Kingship; that precedes all of creation. But through שתמליכוני עליכם, I accept His Kingship over myself and bring it into my actual life.

Why Begin Davening Here?

In נוסח האריז״ל, Adon Olam is the first שבח after Birchot HaShachar and the three introductory pesukim. Before the larger סדר of praise, contemplation, and request begins, I establish whom I am standing before.

The Mateh Moshe, siman 31, records:

כל מי שמכוון בעת התחלת אדון עולם… ערב אני בדבר שתפלתו נשמעת, ואין שטן מקטרג על תפלתו.

One who says the beginning of Adon Olam with כוונה is guaranteed that his tefillah will be heard and that no Satan will prosecute against it. The Mateh Moshe then suggests that this may be why Adon Olam is said before the blessings and praises.

Before beginning the rest of davening, I pause at אדון עולם אשר מלך and recognize that I am standing before the King.

How to quote this נקודה

What is stated in the sources, what is a paraphrase, and what is applied for davening.

Stated in the source

  • The Rebbe states that since עצמותו ית׳ is כל יכול, שייך שיהי׳ מלך גם בלא עם, and that the מלכות of אשר מלך is מלכות as it is rooted in עצמותו ית׳.
  • The Rebbe defines שתמליכוני עליכם as ישראל accepting עול מלכות שמים and קבלת עול — carrying out whatever He decrees because He decrees it.
  • The Mateh Moshe records that one who has כוונה at the beginning of Adon Olam is assured his tefillah is heard and that no Satan prosecutes it, and suggests that this is why Adon Olam opens davening.

Faithful paraphrase

  • מלכות is a relationship rather than raw power: a king rules people who are distinct from him and accept his authority.
  • קבלת עול does not mean having no רצון of one's own; it means His רצון governs when the two differ.

Applied as a practical

  • "You were King before I existed. Now I accept You as King over me" states the two sourced ideas as one thought for davening. It is not a quotation.
  • שתמליכוני עליכם is a Rosh Hashanah theme. Holding it every morning at Adon Olam applies that theme to daily davening.

Attribution and citation

  • The Mateh Moshe introduces the teaching with ומצאתי כתוב and attributes it to R. Yehudah HaChassid, Rav Hai Gaon, and Rav Sherira Gaon. The Mateh Moshe text itself is what has been checked.
