Why Can an Idea Move Me Without Changing Me?
A person can understand an idea in חסידות, feel inspired by it, and still remain essentially where he was. The inspiration was real—but it never became part of how he sees himself and the world.
The Rebbe Rashab describes this problem in קונטרס התפלה:
והנה בכדי לפתוח מוחו ולבו שיוכל לעבוד את ה׳ בתפלה, צריכים לזה הכנה בנפשו להיות כלי הראוי לקבל אור… מההתבוננות בדרך כלל ה״ה מתפעל להיות שהוא בבחי׳ מקיף לבד… אבל כשמתבונן בפרטיות יותר, שהוא הגילוי בבחי׳ פנימיות, לזה צריכים כלי דוקא…
A broad contemplation may affect a person as an אור מקיף: the idea surrounds him, excites him and gives him a sense of something higher. But it does not necessarily enter פנימיות and reorganize his inner world.
This explains something surprising. Sometimes a person is moved by a general statement—Hashem creates everything; אין עוד מלבדו; the נשמה is אלקות—but becomes cold when he tries to think through its details. The general idea allowed him to remain outside it. Detailed התבוננות asks him to receive it personally.
If Hashem is giving existence to everything right now, then I am not independent. If the נשמה truly comes from אלקות, then its distance from Him is not an abstract problem. Once the idea begins making demands on the way I see myself, it can meet resistance.
The problem is not necessarily that the אור is weak. The recipient is not yet a כלי for it.
Preparation Changes the Person Who Will Daven
A כלי does not create the אור. It makes the אור receivable.
That is why the Rebbe Rashab does not begin by prescribing a more novel or exciting idea. He begins with preparation of the person:
אחר שלובשים הטו״ת טוב לחשוב קודם התפלה איזה ענין בדא״ח כחצי שעה או יותר… ובזה יפתח מוחו ולבו שיהי׳ כלי ראוי לקבל כו׳. ולפעמים טוב לעשות כזה גם קודם ברכת יוצר.
After putting on טלית ותפילין, one should spend half an hour or more thinking about an ענין in חסידות. The purpose is that “his mind and heart should open,” becoming a כלי fit to receive.
The physical and mental details matter. The Rebbe Rashab says to put aside thoughts of מילי דעלמא and remain in one place. Moving immediately from one concern to another keeps the person in the same scattered state in which he entered. Remaining physically settled supports a mind that stops running after every thought.
A person may feel unable to release his worries. The Rebbe Rashab points out that before sleep, a person does set aside his concerns sufficiently to rest. If he can do so for a physical need, the capacity certainly exists when something affecting his נפש is at stake.
The ענין in חסידות should be familiar. Preparation is not the time to chase a new חידוש. A new idea can hold the mind because it is interesting; a familiar idea can instead be contemplated as part of preparing the person who will daven.
The earlier chapters describe the אלקות a person contemplates during davening. Chapter 11 turns to the person doing the contemplating. Before the words can carry him upward, he must become capable of being carried.
The Rebbe Rashab summarizes the chapter in five preparations:
קיצור: יבאר ה’ הכנות אל העבודה א) להסיר כל מחשבתו ממילי דעלמא. ולעמוד במקום אחד. ב) לחשוב דא”ח בלבישת טו”ת. ג) לפעול השפלת עצמו ע”י מרירות. ד) לעורר ר”ר על נפשו. ה) להתבונן שעומד לפני עצמות א”ס ב”ה.
These are not five unrelated suggestions. They describe one continuous inner movement.
1. Leave the previous world behind.
The first step is להסיר כל מחשבתו ממילי דעלמא ולעמוד במקום אחד—to remove worldly thoughts and remain in one place.
This does not mean declaring that one’s responsibilities are unimportant. It means that they are not the reality being entered now. For these moments, business, messages, plans and anxieties do not determine what deserves attention.
Before the mind can receive something higher, it must stop granting every competing concern equal access.
2. Give the mind one truth about אלקות.
Emptying the mind is not the goal. After putting aside the noise, the person thinks about one ענין in דא״ח while wearing טלית ותפילין.
This supplies the content of the preparation. It might be התהוות—that every existence is continuously receiving its life from אלקות. It might be the greatness of אוא״ס, the ביטול of the worlds, or the Divine source of the נשמה.
The important point is to remain with one known truth. דעת means not allowing the mind to escape into another subject as soon as the idea becomes uncomfortable or familiar.
3. Allow the truth to expose my distance.
The third step is לפעול השפלת עצמו ע״י מרירות—to bring about humility through מרירות.
מרירות is not hopelessness. It is the pain of recognizing a distance that matters. Once a truth about אלקות becomes real, I can see more honestly how little that truth governs my ordinary awareness, desires and choices.
This is not an interruption of the contemplation. It is what happens when the contemplation becomes personal. I am no longer thinking only about how great אלקות is; I am seeing where I stand in relation to it.
4. Awaken רחמים רבים for the נפש.
The fourth step changes the direction of the feeling. I do not remain focused on my failures. I awaken רחמים רבים for my נפש.
The נשמה comes from an extraordinarily high source, yet it has descended into a body and a world where its Divine reality can become concealed. It can spend its attention and strength on things far beneath what it truly wants.
רחמים here is not self-pity. It is compassion awakened by recognizing something precious in a state of distance. I see not only how far I am, but who it is within me that has become far: a נשמה whose true life is closeness to אלקות.
That recognition begins to awaken a רצון to return.
5. Become conscious before Whom I stand.
The preparation culminates in contemplating שעומד לפני עצמות א״ס ב״ה—that I stand before עצמות א״ס.
Until now, I have been preparing my mind and heart. At this final stage, the direction turns entirely toward Hashem. I am no longer merely analyzing an idea, my spiritual condition or even my נשמה. I become conscious that I am about to address Hashem Himself.
This is the destination of all the preparation: not an improved spiritual mood, but standing before Him.
Why מרירות Must Lead to רחמים
The order of the third and fourth stages is essential.
מרירות breaks through indifference. It allows me to admit that the truth I contemplate and the life I experience are not yet the same. Without that honesty, even a beautiful idea can remain מקיף.
But if the process ended with מרירות, the person could remain occupied with himself—his failures, his distance and his disappointment. That would still leave the self at the center.
רחמים רבים reveals something deeper. My pain is not only that I have failed to become the person I wanted to be. The true object of compassion is the נשמה: a חלק אלקה ממעל ממש living without a clear experience of its Source.
The movement is therefore not:
“I am inadequate, and I should feel bad.”
It is:
“My נשמה belongs close to אלקות. How deeply it deserves to be awakened and brought home.”
מרירות loosens the person’s attachment to his present state. רחמים awakens tenderness and longing for the נשמה’s true state. Together they prepare the heart not merely to understand אלקות, but to want closeness to Him.
When Preparation Enters the Words
Preparation does not belong exclusively to one passage. It changes the person who will say all the words that follow.
If the chosen ענין is התהוות, the awareness can already enter אדון עולם:
אֲדוֹן עוֹלָם אֲשֶׁר מָלַךְ בְּטֶרֶם כָּל יְצִיר נִבְרָא
Hashem’s existence and מלכות do not begin with the created world. The world exists within a reality that is entirely dependent upon Him.
In הודו, the same awareness becomes הודאה:
הוֹדוּ לַה׳ קִרְאוּ בִשְׁמוֹ
I stop treating the world as self-evident and consciously acknowledge its Source.
In ברוך שאמר, התהוות is expressed directly:
שֶׁאָמַר וְהָיָה הָעוֹלָם
The world is here because Hashem speaks it into being. Its existence is not its own.
The source’s surrounding discussion traces how davening then develops the awareness further: פסוקי דזמרה opens the mind to the greatness of אוא״ס; ברכות קריאת שמע describes the ביטול of the מלאכים and higher worlds; שמע brings the contemplation toward אחדות ה׳; and שמונה עשרה is direct עמידה לפני ה׳.
The preparation has done its work when I no longer encounter these words as information arriving from outside. I have put down the world I was carrying. I have remained with one truth. I have allowed it to humble me, awaken רחמים for my נשמה, and make me conscious of Presence.
Now I open the Siddur—not merely prepared to discuss Hashem, but aware that I am standing before Him.
How to quote this נקודה
What is stated in the sources, what is a paraphrase, and what is applied for davening.
Stated in the source
- קונטרס התפלה states that preparation is needed כדי להיות כלי הראוי לקבל אור. It distinguishes התבוננות בדרך כלל, which can affect a person בבחי׳ מקיף, from detailed contemplation, which is גילוי בבחי׳ פנימיות and therefore requires a כלי.
- The Rebbe Rashab instructs that after putting on טלית ותפילין one should contemplate an ענין in דא״ח for כחצי שעה או יותר, so that the mind and heart become a כלי; he adds that this can sometimes be repeated before ברכת יוצר.
- The chapter’s קיצור lists five preparations: removing worldly thoughts and remaining in one place; contemplating דא״ח while wearing טלית ותפילין; bringing oneself to humility through מרירות; awakening רחמים רבים for the נפש; and contemplating that one stands before עצמות א״ס ב״ה.
- The surrounding discussion associates התהוות with ברוך שאמר and פסוקי דזמרה and traces the later movement through ברכות קריאת שמע, שמע and שמונה עשרה.
Faithful paraphrase
- The contrast between being moved by a general statement and becoming cold when thinking through details paraphrases the source’s distinction between התבוננות בדרך כלל and detailed contemplation that enters פנימיות.
Applied as a practical
- The card’s five numbered steps condense the chapter’s קיצור into practical English guidance for preparation before davening.
- “Before I speak, I make room. I want these words to have a place in me” is a first-person application of removing worldly concerns so the person can become a כלי. It is not a quotation from קונטרס התפלה.
- The printed card does not state the Rebbe Rashab’s half-hour practice. That measure is stated in the page body as the source’s stated avodah; the card’s five steps are written for a person who can begin with a shorter, complete sequence.
- The sleep analogy and the contrast between “I am inadequate” and “My נשמה belongs close to אלקות” restate the source’s movement from מרירות to רחמים in contemporary language. They are not quotations.
- Using התהוות as the example ענין through אדון עולם, הודו and ברוך שאמר follows the source’s surrounding discussion. It is one practical application, not the only entry point.
